Rev. Joseph MPR Cocucci, Pastor
Father Cocucci was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his early education at St. Edmond’s Grade School and St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, Philadelphia. He attended the College of the Holy Cross from 1976 until 1978, when he entered the Society of Jesus, remaining a Jesuit for the next ten years. During that time, he was graduated “summa cum laude” from Gonzaga University and “with distinction” from Weston School of Theology, that theologate’s highest honor. During the 1980s he served on the faculty of Loyola High School, Baltimore and worked as a missionary in Southeast Asia (1984-1985). After two years of further graduate studies at Pope John XXIII National Seminary, he was ordained on October 26, 1996 at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Wilmington, Delaware, by Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli. He has served as associate pastor of St. Joseph’s Parish (Middletown, Delaware), St. Mary Magdalen Parish (Wilmington, Delaware), and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish (Bear, Delaware) and as pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Parish (Pocomoke City, Maryland). Father served as Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations from 2003 until 2012 and as Rector of the Cathedral of St. Peter (Wilmington) from 2006 through 2012.
Father Cocucci published States of Grace: The Collected Poems and Lyrics of S. J. Jumper in 1994, was lyricist for Dain Mergenthaler’s 1998 CD Cold Getting Colder, has published, preached and given retreats internationally, and was an acknowledged contributor to Anne Rice’s Christ the Lord and the 2003 edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia. He is a graduate of the American Bankers Association’s School of Bank Card Management.
